With a long tradition in northern Catalonia, ratafia is a liqueur made from maceration of green walnuts, all kinds of wild plants, roots, fruits and flowers, to which medicinal properties were once attributed. The name "ratafia" is derived from the Latin "rata fiat", meaning "it is ratified / the pact is made", words that were used by convention to seal a covenant.

La Tafanera is a story inspired by the historical character of Margarita Tafanera (Terrassa, 1575-1619), who was accused of witchcraft, imprisoned by the Inquisition and finally executed. A side project by BAKU for which we have developed a whole brand storytelling.

The challenge is to create a visual identity for a brand of ratafia, linked to the —freely adapted— story of La Tafanera, focusing on the graphic and conceptual aspects that are more attractive and with more potential. Generating, at the same time, an entire thematic ecosystem that will allow them to be marketed..

Initially we focus on finding a graphic direction that allows us to introduce the key identifying elements of the concept: witchcraft, understood from its more naturalistic side, in connection with the wild environment, its fauna and flora, at the service of homemade remedies, not devoided of pseudo-magical symbolism that contributes a mysterious and seductive element.

The label and main image are solved with a symmetrical collage of photographic elements combined with typography, iconography and the main symbol, which refers to both religious imagery and the concept of spying through a lock.

The bottle uses a small medical container reminiscent of a syrup, restoring the medicinal properties that have been historically attributed to ratafia.

Later, we plan a whole photo shoot, which will serve to dress the entire campaign around the product and provide content for the web and social media. The session delves into the dark, ritualistic and also vibrant nature of the original concept. Produced in a particular natural environment and presenting a group of young people initiated by a symbolic representation of La Tafanera.
